There is some evidence that ironworking was an exclusive practice and connected to emerging social inequality, but this occurred later in the chronological sequence (and it remains unclear whether it was considered a “precious” metal even at that later point). “At Kirikongo, increasing centralization is associated with a gradual co-option of iron metallurgy. Iron metallurgy as an avenue to inequality would provide an alternative spiritual power, de- rived from profound excavation and transformation in the realm of divinities (the earth).
