General Variables
Identity and Location

There is a possibility that the original capital was Oko, but this may not have been for a significant length of time, and archaeological remains have not been found. "There are, indeed, a number of elements in these traditions which seem acceptable. One of these is the assertion, in certain stories, that the capital of the Oyo kingdom was originally not at Oyo Ile but at a town called Oko, whence it is said to have been remobed to Oyo Ile by [King] Sango. [...] Unfortunately the location of the site of the earlier capital at Oko is not known, though some have suggested that it was further north or closer to the River Niger than Oyo Ile." [1]

Temporal Bounds
Duration:
[1,300 CE ➜ 1,535 CE]

1300 has been tentatively selected as the middle option between the very earliest estimates and the latest ones. "It is not possible to assign a date to the foundation of the Oyo kingdom. The foundation of Oyo has been attributed, by different writers, to the tenth century, to around 1300, and to the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century. But there is as yet no worthwhile evidence on this point." [1] "If the identification of Tsoede with Johnson’s Lajomo is accepted,81 then this would bear out the suggestion above that Oyo-ile fell to the Nupe in or about 1535, and that the reoccupation of Oyo-ile was achieved, after the lessening of the Nupe menace, in or about 1610." [2] Note also the following: "It seems the occupation of Old Oyo by thriving agricultural communities was well in place around the ninth century A.D. (Agbaje-Williams, 1983), and by the fifteenth century, a fully fledged town had evolved and was on the path of becoming the capital of the largest empire south of River Niger (Soper and Darling, 1980)." "Contexts that could shed light on the dynamics of social structure and hierarchies in the metropolis, such as the royal burial site of Oyo monarchs and the residences of the elite population, have not been investigated. The mapping of the palace structures has not been followed by systematic excavations (Soper, 1992); and questions of the economy, military system, and ideology of the empire have not been addressed archaeologically, although their general patterns are known from historical studies (e.g, Johnson, 1921; Law, 1977)." [1] Regarding this period, however, one of the historical studies mentioned in this quote also notes: "Of the earliestperiod of Oyo history, before the sixteenth century, very little is known." [2] Law does not then go on to provide specific information directly relevant to this variable.

"Archaeological evidence demonstrates the antiquity of human settlement in Yorubaland, while linguistic evidence suggests that the Yorbua (in the sense of speakers of the Yoruba language) have long occupied their present homeland. The Yoruba have probably lived in Yorubaland for some thousands of years. [...] The traditions of the Yoruba peoples, including the Oyo, trace the origins of kingship to the town of Ife, or Ile Ife." "Contexts that could shed light on the dynamics of social structure and hierarchies in the metropolis, such as the royal burial site of Oyo monarchs and the residences of the elite population, have not been investigated.
